Revving Up the Excitement: F1 Unveils Groundbreaking Starting Procedure for Australian Grand Prix

The new power units for the 2026 F1 season have prompted a rethink over how race starts

The F1 race director, Rui Marquez, has confirmed a different start procedure for the Australian Grand Prix this weekend. Due to concerns over how the cars would react at race starts with the removal of the MGU-H component in the new power unit, drivers must now maintain high revs for an extended period to avoid turbo lag. This unique procedure aims to eliminate any disadvantages for drivers starting at the back of the grid, who have a limited window before the lights go out. A solution trialled during Bahrain testing, involving a blue panel shown for five seconds before the traditional light sequence, will be implemented in Australia. Moreover, Straight Mode, part of the new active aerodynamics, will be available only after Turn 1 on the first lap for safety reasons. These adjustments aim to ensure a safe and orderly competition during the Australian Grand Prix.
